In February of 2019, I was in the midst of a particularly dark episode of depression that consumed me with anhedonia and apathy. I felt lifeless and sapped of passion as I never had been before. On my partner’s birthday, he introduced me to Deltarune. Knowing literally nothing of Undertale, I instantly fell in love with its story and characters and writing. For the first time in a long time, it made me passionate about something and I was very inspired to create. I started writing a Deltarune show, but stopped after writing/demoing 8 songs because I felt I had to do more research on the characters by analyzing the game they all came from. Not to mention, only Chapter 1 was out at the time and there wasn’t much story to work with. Undertale then blew me away so strongly, I started writing this show. That was August of 2019. Since then, Undertale has continued to help and inspire me.

 

Writing musical theater is knowing what stories sing and what stories don’t. This one does. The game’s story moved me so much, I wanted to write this show to share it with people I know who don’t play video games. Some of them are no longer here, and didn’t get to hear it. But still, having a passion project like this has added definition to a very dark period in my life.

 

So, please have this preview of what is still a rough first draft of my Undertale show.
